Why it's worth money

Date Palm

A canariensis puts on 15 to 30cm of trunk a year in good conditions, less in a cool Adelaide winter. Six metres of clear trunk is therefore two decades or more that somebody else already waited through — and nobody grows them that long in a pot, which is why size is the whole price.

Not to be confused with Phoenix dactylifera, the true fruiting date palm. Different tree, and not one we handle.

If you're buying one

Needs planning — a crane, a clear run and clearance from overhead services. Worth it: the root system is fibrous and contained rather than aggressive, so it can sit near paving, a pool or a wall without lifting anything.

If you have one to sell

Common on older Adelaide blocks and frequently in the way of a subdivision. Expensive to remove conventionally because of the sheer weight, which is exactly why we want it. Any sound specimen with truck access is worth a look.
