A slim, hairy-trunked fan palm that takes more cold than anything else on this list.
Trachycarpus comes off the mountains of central China and handles frost that would flatten most palms. It also grows slowly and keeps a narrow trunk, so a tall one is decades of growth in a footprint you can fit down a side passage.
The palm for a cold or shaded spot where a canariensis would sulk. Narrow enough for a courtyard, tall enough to read from the street.
Common in older Adelaide Hills and inner-suburb gardens. The narrow trunk means we can usually get one out without a crane, which makes even awkward positions worth a look.
