The Mediterranean fan palm. Low, wide and multi-stemmed — a clump rather than a column, and tough as anything we handle.
Chamaerops is the only palm native to Europe and holds the most northerly natural range of any palm on earth, which tells you everything about how much cold and neglect it will shrug off. It clumps rather than growing a single trunk, so every stem in a mature specimen is its own years of growth. A wide, many-headed clump simply cannot be shortcut.
Fan fronds, not feather. It stays low and spreads wide, which makes it the answer where a tall palm would be absurd: courtyards, gravel beds, poolside, or under a window. Drought-proof once established and genuinely frost-hardy.
Widely planted in older Adelaide gardens and now routinely in the way of a renovation. Slow enough that a good clump is always worth rescuing — talk to us before anyone takes a chainsaw to it.
